The Project

My name is Christopher Wasko, and I am a music education major and 2013 University Scholar at the University of Connecticut. My University Scholar project involved researching the historical, social, and contemporary performance contexts of Irish rebel songs for the purpose of arranging three of those songs for choral ensemble. My objective was to explore Irish political history, culture, and music in such a way that I would be able to appropriately represent them in a choral medium, then to provide public school students the opportunity to share in the knowledge I aquired by publishing my research and arrangements. Over the course of three semesters, I consulted books and academic articles as well as attended lectures and concerts about Irish folk music and rebel song, traveled to four regions of the Republic of Ireland to experience and document the contemporary performance contexts, studied the musical style, arranged three Irish rebel songs for a cappella SATB choir, and constructed this website to publicize the information I collected. The experience has been unbelievably exciting, informative, and rewarding for me, and I hope you enjoy the product of my work!
